I Forward-Tested Dark Venus vs The Gold Reaper for 69 Days — Here's Which One Survives Prop Firm Rules
Two EAs with opposite philosophies: Dark Venus — a Bollinger Bands scalper on MQL5 with 100,000+ downloads, vs The Gold Reaper V3.3 — an XAUUSD breakout EA marketed as "no grid, no martingale" and built with prop firms in mind. I ran both on separate demo accounts starting early July 2026 with the same $200 balance. Here are the results, exactly as they are, plus which one actually makes more sense for a prop firm challenge.
🟣 Dark Venus — Bollinger Bands Scalper
Dark Venus (developer: Marco Solito, rated 4.49★ from 1,355 reviews on MQL5 Market) is marketed as a high-frequency Bollinger Bands scalper on EURUSD, running small 0.01 lots. Here's the forward-test result from my demo account, 1 July – 8 September 2026:
- Starting balance: $200 → Final balance: $238.07 (Net Profit +$38.07 / +19.04%)
- Total trades: 82 (68 wins / 14 losses) — win rate 82.93%
- Profit Factor: 1.45 | Expected Payoff: 0.46
- Maximal Drawdown: $78.00 (25.45%)
- Max consecutive losses: 7 trades in a row (-$78.00)
Honest note from the trade history: even though it's marketed as a pure BB scalper, at several points Dark Venus opened a 0.02 lot in the same direction while the previous 0.01 lot position hadn't yet closed in profit (e.g. around 5-8 July and 19-20 August) — a small averaging/lot-scaling pattern, not full martingale, but still not the purely flat-lot behavior the marketing implies.
🥇 The Gold Reaper V3.3 — Multi-Strategy Gold Breakout
The Gold Reaper (developer: Profalgo Limited, rated 4.62★ from 38 reviews) trades support/resistance breakouts on XAUUSD, and the developer explicitly claims "no grid, no martingale" — auto-adjusting trade frequency and lot size based on equity and a max-drawdown setting. Forward-test result from my demo account, same period:
- Starting balance: $200 → Final balance: $1,470.77 (Net Profit +$1,270.77 / +635.4%)
- Total trades: 65 (50 wins / 15 losses) — win rate 76.92%
- Profit Factor: 6.18 | Expected Payoff: 19.55
- Maximal Drawdown: $134.81 (11.61%)
- Max consecutive losses: 5 trades in a row (-$92.85)
The order structure does look "busy" at first glance — several pending buy stop/sell stop orders active at once across multiple price levels (labeled _1 through _7, each with its own magic number). But checking the lot size on every single trade, they all stayed flat at 0.01 — no doubling anywhere. This is really a set of parallel sub-strategies (each "slot" runs independently), not a martingale grid that increases lot size after a loss. The developer's "no martingale" claim held up against what I actually saw in the data.

🏢 Which One Actually Fits a Prop Firm Challenge?
The two rules that end most evaluations: a ~5% daily loss cap and a ~10% max overall drawdown (FTMO, FundedNext, and similar firms). From the 69-day data above:
- Dark Venus — a 25.45% max DD is well past the ~10% ceiling most firms set. Combined with the small averaging pattern visible in the trade history, a single losing streak has a real chance of blowing through a 5% daily cap in one day. This one fits better as a low-risk personal cent/live account, not a prop firm evaluation as-is.
- Gold Reaper V3.3 — 11.61% max DD is still slightly above the common 10% ceiling, but far closer, and without any lot-doubling. With risk-per-trade scaled down from the default, this profile is realistic to try on a prop firm evaluation — and it lines up with the developer's stated design goal.
Caveat: neither result guarantees passing an evaluation. The drawdowns above come from a flat 0.01 lot on a $200 account — scaled to a $10,000-100,000 prop firm account with an adjusted risk %, the drawdown percentage will move depending on each EA's own risk settings.
⚠️ Honest Risk Note
This is a demo forward-test, not live trading, and the sample size is still small (65-82 trades over roughly 2 months) — not enough to draw conclusions about long-term performance. Demo results also tend to look cleaner than live ones since there's no real slippage or requotes. Always forward-test any EA yourself for at least 1-2 months before entering an actual prop firm evaluation, and only move to live with money you can afford to lose.
